JabRef : About

JabRef is a bibliography reference manager written in Java and published under GPL. It uses BibTeX as bibliography file format and has advanced features (BibTeX editor, search function, classification of entries, import/export of various formats, launch of external viewers…).

Thierry Uso has ported JabRef 2.4.2 on OpenVMS. Porting means testing all the functions, writing a startup procedure and creating a PCSI kit.

JabRef for OpenVMS needs Java 1.5-0 or later and must be installed on an ODS5 volume; The SYS$LOGIN directory of the user starting JabRef must also be on an ODS5 volume. JabRef has been tested on Alpha and Itanium.

Alpha: free-axpvms-jabref-v0204-2-1.zip
Itanium: free-i64vms-jabref-v0204-2-1.zip

This kit is based on the official archive JabRef-2.4.2.jar.

JabRef : Installation

1. Extract the PCSI kit from the ZIP archive

$ UNZIP “-V” FREE-AXPVMS-JABREF-V0204-2-1.ZIP

or…

$ UNZIP “-V” FREE-I64VMS-JABREF-V0204-2-1.ZIP

2. Install JabRef in your chosen directory

By default, the installation procedure installs JabRef in the SYS$COMMON:[jabref] directory. To install it in dev:[dir.jabref], use the /DESTINATION parameter of the PRODUCT command.

$ PRODUCT INSTALL jabref

or…

$ PRODUCT INSTALL jabref /DESTINATION=dev:[dir]

3. Start JabRef

$ @SYS$COMMON:[jabref]jabref

or…

$ @dev:[dir.jabref]jabref

4. Parameters Files

JabRef creates parameters files in the SYS$LOGIN directory of the user. It is a good idea to set these files in version_limit=1

$ SET DEF SYS$LOGIN
$ SET DEF [.^.java]
$ PURGE/LO [.^.userPrefs.net.sf.jabref…]
$ SET DIR/VER=1 [.^.userPrefs.net.sf.jabref…]
$ SET FILE/VER=1 [.^.userPrefs.net.sf.jabref…]*
